J Appl Physiol 99: 128–133, 2005. First published March 3, 2005; doi:10.1152/japplphysiol.00857.2004.—The primary function of the nose is to warm and humidify air. We have previously shown that raising nasal mucosal temperature by immersing feet in warm water increases the amount of water evaporated by the nose as air passes through it (nasal conditioning capacity; Abbott D, Baroody F, Naureckas E, and Naclerio R. Am J Rhinol 15: 41–45, 2001). To investigate further the effect of nasal mucosal temperature on nasal conditioning capacity, we raised the temperature through -adrenoreceptor blockade by intranasally administering phenoxybenzamine. We hypothesized that blocking -adrenoreceptors during inhalation of cold, dry air would lead to an increase in nasal blood flow, surface temperature, and nasal conditioning capacity, as measured by the water gradient. After appropriate pilot studies, we performed a double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-way crossover study in nine nonatopic, healthy subjects by studying the effect of treatment with intranasal phenoxybenzamine. Nasal mucosal temperature increased significantly after administration of phenoxybenzamine and was associated with a significantly smaller net decrease in nasal mucosal temperature after exposure to cold, dry air (P 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in nasal conditioning capacity between treatments (P 0.05). Phenoxybenzamine decreased the symptom of rhinorrhea after exposure to cold, dry air (P 0.05), but congestion was not different between individuals given phenoxybenzamine and placebo (P 0.05). Our data demonstrate that phenoxybenzamine, despite raising mucosal temperature and not affecting nasal volume, did not affect the ability of the nose to warm and humidify air.

متن کاملPheochromocytoma: a review on preoperative treatment with phenoxybenzamine or doxazosin.
BACKGROUND During surgical treatment of pheochromocytoma,`haemodynamic instability may occur. To prevent this, patients receive preoperative treatment with an alpha-blocker. Nowadays, some centres use phenoxybenzamine, while others use doxazosin. The purpose of this review is to analyse the current evidence of the benefits and risks of phenoxybenzamine and doxazosin in the preoperative treatmen...
متن کاملDoes Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Improve Self-Concept and Patient’s Satisfaction with Nose Fitness? Testing the Differences Before and After Surgery with 3 To 6 Months Follow-Up
Background: Despite the great number of cosmetic rhinoplasties, there are few studies on the improvement of self-concept and patient satisfaction with nose fitness. Objectives: This study attempted to examine the variability of self-concept and patient satisfaction with nose fitness before and after cosmetic rhinoplasty through three to six months of follow-up. Materials and methods: Und...
متن کاملPhysical Optics Calculation of Electromagnetic Scattering From Haack Series Nose Cone
In this paper, the physical optics method is used to study the problem of electromagnetic scattering from Haack series nose cone. First, a meshing scheme is introduced which approximates the curvature of the surface by piecewise linear functions in both axial and rotational directions. This results in planar quadrilateral patches and enables efficient determination of the illuminated region and...

The present work was aimed to design and develop self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDS) with the objective to overcome the problems associated with the delivery of talinolol, a hydrophobic and poorly bioavailable drugs having pH dependant solubility. The solubility of talinolol in various oils, surfactants, cosurfactants and aqueous phases were determined to identify and select the...
